Wife of Mayor aspirant Mirza Abbas, Afroza Abbas on Wednesday launched campaign for her husband for the impending election of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC).
She demanded equal opportunity for all candidates, saying that the election campaign of ruling party candidates are going on in full swing, but the BNP-backed candidates cannot take part in the campaigns for their involvement in various cases.
She also complained that the ‘level playing field’ for all candidates is still absent. “All candidates should
be given equal opportunity to make the election a success,” Afroza said. Abbas, a senior BNP leader and former Mayor of undivided Dhaka City Corporation (DCC), is reportedly on the run as he is facing several cases. In his absence, Afroza started the campaign from Khilgaon area amid huge enthusiasm and fanfare of the party supporters.
Surrounded by a large number of BNP leaders and activists, Afroza sought blessings and support for her husband, requesting the voters to elect Abbas as the Mayor of DSCC in the upcoming election, taking place in April 28.
She visited Bashabo, Madartek, Shantipur, Tilpapara, Sabujbagh and other adjacent areas in the first day’s campaign.
“Most of the BNP candidates are implicated in false cases. They are not even getting anticipatory bails ahead of the polls. Many candidates are still at large to avoid arrest. So their participation in the election has become uncertain,” Afroza said, adding that people are skeptical about free and fair city corporation election. Abdus Salam, Acting President of Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Jubo Dal, said Abbas was granted bail in 37 cases, but he could not start his election campaign for not getting bail in the other three cases.
