Legal notice served for proper management of medical waste

A legal notice was served on Tuesday upon the concerned government bodies to take necessary steps within 72 hours for the proper management of coronavirus-related medical wastes.
Advocate Md JR Khan Robin, a Supreme Court lawyer, sent the legal notice through emails.
The lawyer said that he had sent the copy of the
notice to the health secretary, local government secretary, environment secretary, mayors of Dhaka north and south city corporations, chief waste management officers of the two city corporations and director general of directorate of health services for taking steps to this effect.
If the respondents do not take necessary measures for proper management of coronavirus-related medical waste in 72 hours, the lawyer would move a writ petition before the high court seeking necessary directives, added the lawyer.
In the legal notice, he said around 14,500 tons of coronavirus-related medical waste have so far been produced reportedly, which is harmful for the environment and human health, particularly for the cleaners.
Such medical waste have been left unaddressed, raising the possibility of infecting people with coronavirus, he said in the legal notice.
“Covid-19 virus could be infected from personal protective equipments (PPEs) as per the experts. But the PPEs used in the hospitals and by the public have been thrown here and there without proper management. This is increasing the health risk of the people which is not desirable,” also read the notice.
