A Supreme Court lawyer on Tuesday served legal notice on the government to explain as to why there was firing on the students of Rajshahi University during their demonstration recently.
Supreme Court lawyer Barrister Jyotirmoy Barua, on behalf of Khushi Kabir, Swapon Adnan, Rafiqullah Khan and Fahmidul Haque, served the legal notice.
The notice also asked the government what kind of steps and processes were taken both before and after the opening of fire on students on the Rajshahi University campus.
The notice was sent to Home Secretary, Inspector General of Police, Rajshahi Police Commissioner, and Officer-in-Charge of Motihar thana in Rajshahi.
On February 2, the students of Rajshahi University demonstrated in front of the RU administrative building around 11:30 am demanding of the authorities to cancel the decision to hike fees as well as the evening masters’ programmes.
Police fired rubber bullets and lobbed teargas canisters on the demonstrators as they refused to disperse, leaving over 70 students injured. Besides, the RU BCL men allegedly joined the cops during the attacks on the students.
Later, at around 2 pm, 15 students sustained bullet injuries as police again opened fire and used teargas shells in front of the university’ s library.
Later, authorities declared the university closed for an indefinite period and all resident students were asked to vacate their dormitories by 8 am on February 3 following the campus violence.
