Chief Justice (CJ) Syed Mahmud Hossain on Sunday said that the most persecuted people of the society, especially women and children, should not be deprived of legal aid.
He was speaking as the chief guest in a discussion programme jointly organized by Supreme Court Legal Aid Committee and Manusher Jonno Foundation (MJF) under the banner of “Government legal services in higher judiciary: Ongoing process and expectations” at the Supreme Court auditorium yesterday.
Law Minister Anisul Huq was also present on the occasion as a special guest. Chairman of Supreme Court Legal Aid Committee Justice M Enayetur Rahim presided over the programme.
The Chief Justice said, “To get justice and the right to get equal protection of law are the universal fundamental human rights. Legal Aid is one of the main sources of establishment of rule of law, human rights protection and poor-friendly and welfare justice system. We repeatedly echo the unanimous words of ‘equality in the eyes of law’ and it can never be implemented without legal assistance.”
“Legal aid under government management is not a charity or mercy. This is the right of the poor and helpless people, and also an essential responsibility of the State. The Legal Aid Act, 2000, was formulated to provide legal support to the people who are financially ineligible, resource less and unable to get justice. Really it was a legendary law,” said the Chief Justice.
At least 3,93,790 people has been given legal aid since 2009, the CJ added.
Attorney General Mahbubey Alam, Supreme Court Bar Association President Advocate A M Aminuddin, Registrar General of SC Dr Md Zakir Hossain, Director of National Legal Aid Services Organization Aminul Islam and the Executive of Manusher Jonnon Foundation Shahin Alam were present in the programme.
