Leave for RHD officials during Eid cancelled

Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader on Friday said that the leave of all Road Transport and Highways Division officials had been cancelled with a view to comforting the journey of Eid passengers.
 “Engineers of the Roads and Highways Department or RHD will supervise road repairing work before the Eid-Ul-Azha,” he said.
The Minister said this while talking to reporters on the Dhaka-Tangail Highway at Chandra intersection in Gazipur on Friday morning.
 “The contractors and highway police have been asked to make the roads functional from before the beginning of the Eid holidays,” he said.
Obaidul Quader visited the highway on Friday to see the condition of the road.
 “It will of course rain during the monsoon season. It cannot be an excuse for leaving roads in battered conditions. So rain can’t be held responsible for pitiable condition of roads. Like all ailments,
there are treatments available for roads damaged by heavy rain,” he said.
 “This year, a number of points of the highways have been damaged in the wake of floods. As the floodwaters have begun to recede, the engineers along with the contractors have started the repair work,” he said.
Quader affirmed that passengers will have hassle free journey towards home before and after Eid, he claimed.
“We are watching the overall situation to comfort the holiday makers’ journey and we won’t let any disruption in vehicular movement,” he said.
The Ministry asked the authorities concerned to check fitness certificates of trucks carrying cattle so that they do not break down half way, the Minister said.
Atikul Islam, Deputy Inspector General of highway police, Sabuj Uddin Khan, Dhaka Divisional Engineer of RHD and Mohammad Harun-or-Rashid, Superintendent of Gazipur police were present.
