Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed said the government has set US$ 5 billion export target of leather and leather goods by 2021.
“The government has decided to provide financial assistance for the export of leather and other products to attain the target of US$ 60 billion export by the golden jubilee of the country’s independence,” he added.
The minister was addressing the opening ceremony of the fourth edition of the three-day Leather Tech Bangladesh-2016 as the chief guest in city’s International Convention City, Basundhara Wednesday evening.
Referring to the goal of $50 billion export from the RMG sector, he said leather and othersectors would also contribute to reaching the target set by the government. “The government would take necessary measures for the goal,” added Tofail.
Now, the export earnings from the leather sector is $1.16 billion.
Terming the leather sector as a flourishing one, Senior Commerce Secretary Hedayetullah Al Mamoon said it would grow further in future as Bangladesh has efficiency.
He said any differences in tax structures for the sector would be removed.
A total of 250 organizations from 15 countries including host Bangladesh, India, China, Korea, Turkey, Egypt, Vietnam, UK, Sri Lanka, Italy, Germany, Singapore, Japan, Taiwan, and Hong Kong are taking part in the Leather Tech -2016.
