A Jatiyatabadi Juba Dal leader has died in a ‘shootout’ with police in Lakshmipur. Police have claimed that the deceased, identified as ‘Rony’, 24, was also a member of a criminal group, ‘Jisan Bahini’, of the Sadar Upazila.
Rony’s family, however, alleged that he was shot dead after being whisked away from Noakhali’s Begumganj by some people who identified themselves as detective police.
The district’s Assistant Police Superintendent (Circle/Sadar) Md Nasim Mia contradicted family’s version saying Rony died in the shootout between Jisan Bahini and police which took place at the Chandraganj Union’s Latipur area around 10pm Monday night.
The Upazila’s Juba Dal President Mohammad Ali Kiran confirmed that Rony was a member of the party.
ASP Nasim told this year agency that police carried out a raid at Chandraganj to arrest one Jishan, a known criminal in the area.
The shootout continued for about two hours during which Rony was shot in the knee. Later police recovered his body.
Police took the body to the district’s Sadar Hospital at night and the autopsy was done on Tuesday morning.
Lakshmipur Sadar Upazila (East) Juba Dal President Kiran accused the police of shooting Rony in the leg after detaining him and that they took him to the hospital after he died.
Rony’s father Makbul Ahamed told bdnews24.com that his son was taken away by force from Begumganj on Monday afternoon.
“They drove around in Chandraganj with him and shot him dead at night.”
His father claimed that Rony was not a terrorist, he was a trader at the Chandraganj Bazar.
