BNP Vice Chairman and Convenor of Jatiyatabadi Ainjibi Forum Khandaker Mahbub Hossain has alleged that this government has come to state power through vote rigging in the 11th national parliamentary elections.
“This illegal government is involved in corruption, looting and disappearing of opponent political leaders and activists,” while he was speaking at a meeting on ‘Free democracy and release of Begum Khaleda Zia’ organized by Jatiyatabadi Ainjibi Forum at the Jatiya Press Club on Saturday.
He said this government also illegally sent BNP Chief Begum Khaleda Zia to jail. “We know that the release of Khaleda Zia will not be possible through legal process due to government’s interference on her bail. So, we have to wage greater movement on the street.”
Speaking at the programme, Barrister Mainul Hosein, a former adviser to the caretaker government, said, the country where criminalisation and corruption have made cruelty easy cannot be our Bangladesh. We have the honesty and ability to make Bangladesh a civilised country practising democracy and the rule of law.
“I’m honoured to be invited to address this Jatiyatabadi Ainjibi Conference. I have accepted the invitation for the opportunity to express my gratitude to the lawyers of BNP for helping
me in fighting 22 defamation cases initiated by the government most illegally,” he added.
Mainul Hosein also said, “I feel proud for all of you when the lawyers of Awami League and BNP together protested arbitrary cancellation of my bail.
In a free country the people are the sovereign power and the government that denied the people’s vote is only a hanging government, depending on police power, he said.
Under the torrents of corruption and abuse of power the government is wobbling away. The country is in lawlessness chaos and the government is also a victim of that chaos.
Mainul said “I have come to you to express my expectation that the lawyers will be a united constructive force on the basis of their professional commitment for establishing the rule of law and democracy irrespective of party affiliations.”
He reasserted that as lawyer, believing in the rule of law, it is most inhuman not to grant bail to Begum Khaleda Zia though she is suffering from various illnesses because of her old age. She should be released on bail for proper treatment.
BNP senior leader Barrister Moudud Ahmed, in his speech, said bargaining with the government is not needed for the release of Khaleda Zia since the street movement is the only way to have her freed from jail.
“We needn’t bargain with anyone over the issue of Khaleda Zia’s release. She won’t get bail as the government does not want it. I personally believe it’s not possible to free her through the legal process,” the BNP leader said.
Moudud, a BNP standing committee member, came up with such comments a day after Khaleda Zia’s relatives expressed their desire to take her abroad for treatment.
BNP Vice Chairman Advocate Zainul Abedin, Supreme Court Lawyers Association Secretary Barrister Mahbub Uddin Khokon and Advocate Taimur Alam Khandaker, among others were present at the meeting.
