Lawmakers term new budget as mega budget for uplift of people

Lawmakers in the general discussion in the Jatiya Sangsad on Thursday called the government to consider the proposed 15 per cent VAT and other duties imposed on bank accounts into a tolerable limit and reduction of the interest rates on the savings certificates. Participating in the general discussion on the proposed budget for fiscal 2017-2018, the treasury bench lawmaker Panchanan Biswas of Khulna-1 termed the new budget as the mega budget in the history of Bangladesh for the uplift of the people.
He said the outlay of the proposed budget has increased five folds in the last eight years and the government has adequate capacity to implement the proposed budget.
Quoting the Asian Development Bank (ADB) remarks on government’s better performance on foreign loan utilization, the ruling party lawmaker said the ADB is giving special priority to Bangladesh among the countries in the Asia-Pacific region. And that’s why, he said the ADB is providing US$ 8,000 million for the next five years.
Highlighting the budget outlay of Taka 24,489 crore for social security sector, Panchanan said the government has incorporated 128 kinds of social security allowances in the proposed budget which includes VGF, Hijra allowance, widow allowance and treatment allowances for the poor.
