A CRIME racket is allegedly trading drugs and promoting relationships with young women by inviting youths to attend DJ parties in the capital and some other major cities. Law enforcers said that there are different sorts of DJ parties in Dhaka and Chattogram’s posh areas among the millionaire kids. The recent arrest of a female disc jockey, also a private university student and the death of a student for excessive alcohol drinking underpin the tip of the crime. The deep state of DJ culture that grew up before law enforcers’ nose, media, the ruling class and business for spending money lavishly has been busted by the police. The DJ culture has intruded our society in this decade, destabilises our cultural heritage and promotes free mixing and drugs.
On February 12, the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) raided a motor launch that left Sadarghat for Chandpur for a picnic party, and arrested 96 people on charges of being involved in drugs, gambling and illegal relationship with women. Following the casino and anti-drug campaigns, such activities were continuing in the name of enjoying river cruise. Last February, RAB had arrested a female Juba League leader from Narsingdi, who was expelled later, and three of her associates from the airport and a hotel in Gulshan. It is noticed with great concern that DJ parties have been arranged in the city in this winter season amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
The RAB force said they have been playing a strict role against selling, using and consuming of drugs. Criminologists said DJ party is not our culture but adapted from Western pop culture. Pleasure, abuse, drugs are intertwined in the DJ culture globally. The government must be strict to uproot this alien culture from the society. DJ culture flourishes as we don’t have adequate healthy entertainment, like sports, drama and movies. Addiction to DJ culture cannot be stopped only through the enforcement of law. Families, educational institutions and the society should discharge their responsibilities to prevent people from indulging in harmful activities. Healthy entertainment should be promoted to meet the cravings of young people.
