The government is amending the law to increase the pension of retired Supreme Court judges.
Monday’s regular Cabinet meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, approved changes to The Supreme Court Judges (Leave, Pension and Privileges) Ordinance (Amendment) Act, 2014.
Cabinet Secretary Musharraf Hossain Bhuiyan later explained that if a judge retires with a basic pay of Tk 56,000, he will get 80 percent of it, Tk 44,800, as pension. He receives half this amount as a one-time sum and the rest as monthly pension.
Bhuiyan said the amendment aimed at increasing the gratuity amount at three levels. If a judge retires when he is between 40 and 45 years with a basic pay of Tk 56,000, he will receive 260 times of Tk 22,400, which is Tk 5,824,000, as a one-time payment. Currently, the amount is 230 times for the age group. In the same way, the gratuity amount for the 45-50 age group is being increased to 245 times from 215 times. For those aged above 50, the rate is being raised to 230 times from 200 times. The retirement age for Supreme Court judges is 67.
