Law ministry plans to clear 6 lakh cases from existing backlog in 2021

The law ministry planned to clear at least six lakh cases from the existing 38 lakh pending cases in the courts across the country in 2021.
“We have held few meetings in the law ministry in the last two months and decided to reduce six lakhs of the backlog cases in the year of 2021. We have made a plan and have already started to work to this effect,” Law Minister Anisul Huq told the media without elaborating further plan.
The government will take necessary steps in this regard, he said, adding that the government had a plan to reduce at least five to six lakh cases from the existing backlog within 2020 but it was not implemented due to ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.
According to a Supreme Court study report, total of 36,84,728 cases were pending with all the courts till December 31, 2019 after total 11,65,935 cases have been disposed of since January 1 to December 31, 2019.
