A passenger vessel has sunk in the Meghna on way to Sureswar from Dhaka.MV Miraj-4 was caught in a storm on Thursday afternoon and sank near Daulatdia in Munshiganj. Munshiganj Deputy Commissioner Saiful Islam said eight bodies had been recovered from the river until 5:30pm. Among the victims are Mamal Hossain, 50, Tumpa Begum, 30, and Setar Begum, 50, all from Shariatpur. Tumpa’s children ‘Sumona’, 8, and ‘Mahim’, 6, were missing, her husband ‘Liton’ said. Munshiganj’s acting Superintendent of Police Jakir Hossain said there were at least 200 passengers on the vessel. The coast guard, district administration and locals are engaged in the rescue operation.Rescue vessels Durbar and Prottoy started for Daulatdia around 5pm from Narayanganj to salvage the launch. Mahmud Hossain, a transport inspector for Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) at Dhaka’s Sadarghat terminal, said MV Miraj-4 left Dhaka at 1pm.
