An unbeaten hundred from opener Tom Latham and a fifty from skipper Kane Williamson led hosts New Zealand fightback in the first of a two-match Test series against Bangladesh in Wellington.
The Blackcaps scored 292 for 3 at stumps on Day 3 at Basin Reserve in response to Tigers’ 595 for 8 in the first innings. The hosts are still trailing by 303 runs with 7 wickets in hand.
Earlier after the first hour of the Day 3 on Saturday, Bangladesh declared first inning at 595/8, second highest Test score of the country.
Resuming batting at 542/7, the visitors added 53 runs more with a blistering unbeaten fifty from Sabbir Rahman. The 25-year hard-hitter scored 54 not out off 86 balls smashing 7 boundaries. The only wicket fell in the morning was Taskin Ahmed who scored 3.
Retaining the limelight of the batting, Bangladesh bowlers started well and picked up New Zealand’s first wicket for 54 in the 17th over as Kamrul Islam Rabbi made opener Jeet Raval (27) caught by Imrul Kayes, who holds the gloves as Mushfiqur Rahim suffers a thumb injury.
Debutant Taskin Ahmed could have picked up a wicket in his first over but he had a catch dropped in the slips. He suffered further, conceding eight fours in his 11 overs but eventually, he found the edge again and New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson, having just got to fifty, was walking back. Williamson scored 53 off just 55 balls.
Rabbi then also made Ross Taylor (40) caught by Mahmudullah in the 48th over as the Blackcaps lost their third wicket for 205.
However, Tom Latham continued and got his hundred off 167 balls with 12 boundaries. He added 87 runs in the fourth wicket unbeaten partnership with Henry Nicholls as rain and bad light forced to take early stumps.
Latham was unbeaten on 119 while his partner Nicholls on 35.
