Farmers are likely to get much awaited late blight resistant variety potato seed from next season as this variety is being cultivated on trial basis at ‘Foundation Seed Potato Production Farm’ in Domar Upazila under Bangladesh Agriculture Development Corporation(BADC).
Earlier, Bangladesh Agriculture Research Institute (BARI) successfully modified two foreign varieties and National Seed Board (NSB) released the varieties in November for cultivating at farmers level.
This situation makes farmers optimistic as late blight disease of potato is regarded as curse to them for years for its devastating nature in potato fields.
Deputy Director (DD) of ‘Foundation Seed Potato Producing Farm’ in Domar Enamul Huque said, “As NSB released the varieties, we have cultivated them in our farm on trial basis in 10 acres land and targeting to get yield more than 100 tons and likely to distribute to farmers.”
Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) would now popularise the seed varieties among farmers and we expect that those would be much demandable in our country as potato farmers waiting for long to get rid of late blight disease regarded as a curse, said the DD further.
Principal scientific officer of BARI at breeder seed production center at Panchagar Amal Kumar Das said, “We’re able two foreign varieties imported from Netherland named Alouette and Carolus as late blight resistant potato suitable in our country and renamed them as BARI-90 and BARI-91 respectively.”
“We conduct research and work for years and observe their our weather condition,” added the principal scientific officer.
DD of Nilphamari DAE Nikhil Chandra Biswas said, “late blight is a curse to farmers as it ruins their potato fields rapidly and needs at least five time spray of pesticide of mancozed group to save them but partially (as good area ruins fast by this time) spending additional four thousand taka in an acre.”
“We’re instructed by higher authority to popularize newly released late blight resistant potato seed varieties among farmers and optimistic that they would start cultivation from next season with vigour as our field staff making them aware,” the DD added.
