Rafiqul Islam, Sherpur :
There are several Mughal architectural sites in Sherpur district. Among them Laskar Mosque at Ghagra is still standing in an un-ruined position.
It is one of the sixteen Mughal mosques in Bangladesh. Though it is now under the Archeology Department, village people still say their prayer in this mosque regularly.
The mosque was built nearly two hundred years ago and the historic Ghagra Laskar mosque is a unique testimony of architecture.
The mosque is situated at Ghagra Laskar in Jhenaigati upazila of Sherpur district. It is 14 k.m away from Sherpur district sadar. On the door of the mosque inscribed in a plate it’s establishment date and it is 1228 hizri or 1808A.D. It’s structural system and architectural strategy is artful and very nice. There are two arches inside it. The mosque is one domed and the length and width of the mosque are the same and it is 30 feet. Only the large dome is on the centre of the mosque and ten miners round the dome. Among the miners, four are on four corner. The mosque has only one door. The interior and exterior of the mosque is decorated with inscribed flowers and foliage.
The national museum and antiquities department enlisted the mosque as mughal architectural site ten years ago. But without employing a caretaker, setting a notice board and slightly extending one side, It has not done any work here. At present it’s floor is going down and crackle in the wall. If the mosque is not reformed immediately, it will destroy soon.
