A large number of people gathered at the Dhaka New Market on Sunday for Eid shopping after clashes between the Dhaka College students and the New Market traders-employees.
Eid-ul-Fitr, the largest festival of Muslim community, is a week ahead. People were seen rushing from one shop to another for buying.
The New Market, Gausia, Chandrima, and Nurjahan Market were filled in with parents, children, family members and students since morning. Customers were seen at every shop.
The Hawkers of the Market and adjacent Mirpur road have been invoking in different tunes with prices. They also blocked Mirpur road footpaths.
The Market goers and pedestrians were facing difficulties due to occupation of footpaths.
Sharmin Naher Setu, a customer of the Market, has bought three Hijabs, one for own, one for her mother’s and another for her sister.
She said, “I was supposed to come to the market earlier but I was scared because of the students-traders clashes. I will go home today in a hurry.”
Morshed Uddin also came to the Market with his child. He said, “I have come to market for Eid shopping.”
However, the intense crowds at the market during summer and the condition of the sidewalks make it very difficult to shop on fasting.” Shops owners said, they are satisfied with sales in the last two days.
Saiful Islam, a businessman of New Market, said, “I also picked up a lot of clothes as a target of Eid. Although, the clashes spoiled two days which had a picked time for business and after that the purchasers were in a panic.”
“The overall sales and customer’s appearance were satisfactory in the last two days. I hope that the sales will increase on the next day,” he added.
Nazir Ahmed sells pants in New Market. He said, “On the occasion of Eid, there is a large crowd of customers all day long. Selling is going well.”
