The Bangabandhu Tunnel will create a major corridor for industrialization in Bangladesh, said renowned economist Professor Dr. Moinul Islam.
He said Bangabandhu Tunnel is an excellent project. It will connect the south bank of the Karnafuli river in Chattogram . The project will help port city to become one city two town like Shanghai in China. He said this while exchanging views with media persons on Tuesday morning regarding the construction of Bangabandhu Tunnel.
Bangabandhu Tunnel Project Director Engineer Harunur Rashid said about 900 workers are working day and night on the tunnel construction project. Of these, 600 are locals and 290 are Chinese nationals.
Engr. Harunur Rashid said The giant tunnel boring machine (TBM) is moving ahead to cut the soil to make a tunnel at the bottom of the river. One by one segments in the back, a tube is being made by attaching a pair of rings. Work is not limited to just making tubes.
Huge works including construction of connecting road and flyover are going on on both the banks of the river. Domestic and foreign engineers and workers are working 24 hours a day.
On 24 February 2019, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the construction works of Bangabandhu Tunnel. So far, 61 per cent of the project has been completed. The rest of the work will be completed by 2022, project officials said.
The engineers and workers of the project are now busy with the construction of the second tube which started on December 12.
In addition, a 726-meter flyover is being built to climb the main road from the mouth of the tunnel at the end of Anwara.
All the pillars of this flyover have already been installed. Now the work of making girders and slabs will begin, project officials said.
About 5 km of approach road from the last end of the flyover to Anwara Chaturi Chaumuhani is being filled with soil.
Through this approach road, the tunnel vehicle will reach Shikalbaha junction on Chittagong-Cox’s Bazar highway.On the other hand, work is underway to build a half-kilometer connecting road at the entrance of City Outer Ring Road, Elevated Expressway and Tunnel at the end of Patenga.
