It’s been more than half a year since Lionel Messi left FC Barcelona and joined Paris Saint Germain (PSG). Football world was in shock and it was a heart-breaking moment for Barca president Joan Laporta.
But in an interview with Marca, Laporta refused to apologise for taking the decision to release the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner.
“It is the saddest decision of all. I would never have wanted to take it, but I am not sorry either because we had to put the club above everything. We had to put the institution above everything, which is what we did, even ahead of the best player. The situation was what it was,” Laporta said.
Due to the salary cap it became impossible for the Catalan to hold the Argentine. PSG hastily moved to snap up Messi on a free transfer in August.
Messi has struggled to recapture his best with the Ligue 1 side. In a season that has been interrupted by injury, illness and international duty, he has managed to score only a couple of league goals.
However, he has contributed heavily in terms of assists and has also struck five times in the Champions League.
