Sri Lanka batsmen dominated on the third day of the 1st Test making 504 for the loss of three wickets in the first innings against hosts Bangladesh at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chittagong on Friday.
Earlier, Bangladesh piled up a mammoth total of 513 in the first innings on the second day (Thursday).
Sri Lanka trailed by nine runs from Bangladesh in the first innings. The islanders have seven wickets to spare.
Sri Lanka resumed their first innings with the over-night score of 187 for the loss of one wicket.
Kusal Mendis and Dhananjaya de Silva resumed their first innings with the over-night score of 83 and 104 runs respectively.
Kusal Mendis and Dhananjaya put on together more 121 runs in the second wicket stand on the third day before Dhananjaya was caught by wicketkeeper Liton Das off Mustafizur Rahman when Sri Lanka’s total was 308 for the loss of two wickets.
Dhanajaya knocked a superb 173. His 229-ball innings was ornamented with 21 fours and a sixer.
Kusal Mendis hit a mervellous 196. His 327-ball innings was decorated with 22 fours and two sixers. It was Kusal’s 4th Test hundred.
After Dhananjaya’s dismissal, Kusal Mendis and Roshen Silva added together 107 runs for the third wicket partnership before Mendis was caught at the midwicket by Mushfiqur Rahim off Taijul Islam when the tourists’ score was 415 for the loss of three wickets.
After Kusal’s departure, Roshen Silva and Dinesh Chandimal contributed together 89 runs in the unbroken fourth wicket stand.
Roshen Silva remained unbeaten with 87. His 173-ball innings saw five fours and a sixer. Roshen reached his second Test fifty-run landmark playing 90 balls with three fours.
Dinesh Chandimal remained unbeaten with 37. His 90-ball knock had one four.
Left-arm pacer Mustafizur Rahman and left-arm spinner Taijul Islam got success with the cherry on the third day.
Mustafizur Rahman and Taijul Islam took one wicket each for 88 and 144 runs respectively.
