The International Mother Language Day Rating Chess tournament began on Tuesday at Sonargaon Upazila Parisad auditorium.
Liakot Hossain Khoka MP, Narayangaj-3 institution formally inaugurated the meet as Chief Guest.
Shahinur Islam, Upazela Nirbahi officer presided the opening ceremony. Advocate Shamsul Islam Bhuiyan, president of Sonargaon Upazela Awami League and Mahfuzur Rahman Kalam, general secretary of Sonargaon Upazela Awami League were present as special guests.
A total of 161 players including GM Ziaur Rahman, FM Syed Mahfuzur Rahman, FM Mehdi Hasan, FM Mohamman Fahad Rahman and FM Abdul Malek, WFM Sharmin Sultana Shirin and Indian rated player Nikhil are participating in the event.
The event is being held in 9 round Swiss-League system and prize money of Taka two lac will be given to the winners. The 2nd round games will start tomorrow (Wednesday) at the same venue at 10 am.
