Landslides have once again struck Rangamati, the hill district in southeast Bangladesh that was recently devastated by a series of mudslide.
People in Khagrhachharhi are also fearing it would be their turn again as incessant rainfall, both light and heavy, have lashed both the districts since Sunday night.
An entire hill collapsed at Deppochharhi on the Chittagong-Rangamati Highway on Monday afternoon, suspending traffic movement. No casualties have been reported.
“We cleared the rubble swiftly to bring vehicular movement back to normal,” said Executive Engineer Emdad Hossain of the Roads and Highways Department in Rangamati.
Rangamati district Deputy Commissioner (DC) Manjarul Mannan said the homeless people would be shifted to four shelter homes newly set up in the district.
The stadium, gymnasium, Rangamati High School auditorium and the student hostel of Rangamati Medical College will be used as shelter homes, he said.
A 16-member team from the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief will arrive in Rangamati on Tuesday to find out causes of the landslides and assess the damage.
They will make recommendations on the rehabilitation of those affected.
Announcements through loudspeakers are being made in Khagrachharhi and Rangamati, calling people to move to shelter homes.
Five shelter homes were opened in Khagrhachharhi following the landslides that took more than 150 lives in six districts 20 days ago.
The shelter houses could be used once again, said Khagrhachharhi DC Rashedul Islam.
Rangamati saw the highest death toll of more than 120.
Khagrhachharhi Municipality Mayor Rafiqul Alam has flagged out Kalabagan, Nancybazar, Shalban, Hribath, Para Gyap, and Atthar Poribar as risky zones in the town.
The district suffered four casualties following the downpour on Jun 12.
