Setaful Islam, the land acquisition officer, had withdrawn the fund from the Sonali Bank’s Kishoreganj branch and disappeared suddenly.
He went to the bank in a car with sacks to receive the money, officials said.
They also held officials of Kishoreganj District Accounts Office and Sonali Bank officials of Kishoreganj branch responsible for the incident.
Admitting the incident Dhaka Divisional Commissioner M Bazlul Karim Chowdhury told The New Nation that he sent a letter on Tuesday to the Ministry of Public Administration asking for departmental, legal and administrative measures against the officer.
“I have never seen such a terrible and dishonest person in my life. I also requested the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) to file a case against Setaful Islam,” he added.
Offices of the Dhaka Divisional Commissioner and Kishoreganj Deputy Commissioner are investigating the matter.
On December 5, a cheque of Tk 5 crore of compensation fund singed by Kishoreganj Accounts officer was deposited to the head of salary and allowances of the district’s land acquisition office. On December 6 and 7, Setaful Islam withdrew Tk 4.94 crore in two phases.
The remaining Tk 6.0 lakh was sent to an organization named Tapan Industries.
Prior to this, he also withdrew about Tk 8.0 crore. Besides, he had prepared cheques for the embezzlement of more than Tk 10 crore, according to preliminary investigation report.
