The High Court on Wednesday ordered the government bodies concerned to immediately stop production and display of laminated election posters across the country as those are harmful to the environment.
The court also asked the authorities to properly dispose the laminated posters which have already been produced and displayed in Dhaka, ahead of the city corporation elections. The High Court Bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Md Mostafizur Rahman passed the order on a Suo Moto (voluntary) move after considering a report published in a English daily under the banner of “Laminated posters in city polls : a big threat to environment”.
Two Supreme Court lawyers, Barrister Manoj Kumar Bhowmick and Advocate Sulaiman Howladar, brought the news cutting to the attention of the court and sought necessary directives from the court.
The court also issued a rule asking the respondents to explain in four weeks as to why they should not be directed to stop production and display of laminated posters across the country.
Election Commission, Election Commission Secretary, LGRD Secretary, Industries Secretary, Health Secretary, Environment Secretary and the Chief Executive Officers of Dhaka North and South City Corporations have to comply with the rules.
Barrister Manoj Kumar Bhowmick said, “The High Court ordered to stop the production and display of the laminated election posters across country till disposed of the rule issued in this regard.”
“Besides, the court asked the authorities to properly dispose all the posters which have already been produced and displayed in Dhaka, ahead of the city corporation elections,” added the lawyer.
