Business Desk :
The country’s automobile makers are deprived of proper policy support, design and drawing to locally produce two, three and four-wheeler vehicles, businesses said on Thursday.
The government should come up with a proper policy to develop the sector, 99% of which is occupied by foreign brands, they also said.
They made the remarks at the first meeting of the standing committee on automobile manufacturers and assemblers of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) held at the FBCCI office in the capital.
FBCCI President Md Jashim Uddin said Bangladesh has been gradually lowering its dependency on imports and strengthening capacity of the local manufacturers.
He also said proper branding of capacity of the local manufacturers would help in attracting new investments and create employment as well.
Md Habib Ullah Dawn, director in charge of the standing committee of the FBCCI, called for ensuring a competitive market of quality products.
He also urged the government TO solve the problems related to policies on the automobile industry.
Hafizur Rahman Khan, chairman of the standing committee and chairman of Runner Group, urged the businessmen to work on sector-wise development and prepare draft plans which would be submitted to the government through the FBCCI.
Matiur Rahman, co-chairman of the committee, also chairman and managing director of Uttara Group, complained that the development of the automobile sector was being hampered as a result of formulating policies without consulting the traders.
He added that if the policy is formulated in consultation with the entrepreneurs of the sector, it will accelerate the development of the country’s automobile industry.
