Flyovers in the capital are fearful to the drivers, motor workers and passengers at night due to in sufficient light.
Most of the flyovers are now safe havens for the snatchers, drug addicts and devils at night in view of insufficient light there on and in the flyovers.
Many incidents occur every night, but get no media coverage as most of the victims show no interest to focus their miseries.
Majority incidents are not brought to the notice of police for the same reason.
Besides dumping of garbage, dusts and grabbing the spaces make the environment toxic on most of those flyovers.
For the convenience of the city dwellers, several flyovers have been constructed in the capital in the last eight years to ease the traffic congestion on the roads in the capital.
Five flyovers and two overpasses have been constructed in the capital for modernization of road transport management system.
Flyovers are Mohakhali Flyover, Khilgaon Flyover, Mayor Hanif Flyover, Kuril Flyover, Malibagh-Mouchak Flyover. The two overpasses at Banani and Bijay Sarani.
Sadly the flyovers are not carefully maintained.
During the day time, the flyovers have a good-looking beauty, but in the evening, it takes a terrifying look. Snatchers and drug addict frequently attack the small sized vehicles using different tricks.
Besides, the vagabonds are using those flyovers as their permanent hubs and use as toilets.
On Kuril Biswaroad flyover, darkness prevails every night which makes the passengers and drivers of private cars, motor bikes and taxies vulnerable.
Snatchers wait for committing crime to snatch people.
Bus drivers and their assistants of every bus company use the flyover under duress.
Under the flyover is bus and auto rickshaws have made stoppage. Shopkeepers are using those as tea stalls. Similarly, Mayor Hanif flyovers are now horse rearing places in Chankherpool area.
The flyover have been made dumping garbage.
Fish sellers are using places under Moghbazar flyover for fish trading for long.
Mohakhali and Mirpur flyovers are also dumping places of garbage.
Most of the flyovers are dirty and unusable as per the local people and passengers use those.
Sources said, Dhaka North City Corporation demanded Tk 87 crore for reestablishing lighting systems, but it is yet unsettled. When contacted, Urban Planner and Architect Iqbal Habib told The New Nation on Monday, “Lack of coordination is the main reason behind unusable conditions of the flyovers in the capital.”
Showing examples, he said, Kuril Flyover has been constructed by Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (Rajuk) and Moghbazar flyover by Local Government Engineering Department (LGED).
They are responsible to maintain those flyovers but the city corporations are responsible for maintaining electricity and lightings.
As a result, there are lacks of coordination occurred and resulting to the mismanagements, he added.
The urban planner said, any organization can construct any installation but all should have to handover those to the authority for maintenance.
