Harvesting of Boro paddy has started in four upazilas amid labour crisis in some areas.
It will continue in full-swing till the mid-May, farmers said.
The farmers of the areas are happy as they are going to have a bumper production of Boro paddy.
But they are worried about getting fair price. Sources at the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) said the production of Boro paddy is likely to exceed the target this year on account of favourable climate.
The paddy was cultivated on 1,92,180 hectares of land in 12 upazilas of Bogra this year, which was about 300 hectares more over the last year. The production target has been set at 7 lakh tonnes of rice. But now, the farmers expect the yield to go higher than that if there is no hailstorm or tornado.
Farmers in several villages of Nondigram upazila are seen busy harvesting BR-28, Miniket, BR-Hira and others varieties of Boro paddy amid much enthusiasm. Farmers said they are getting 22 to 28 maunds of paddy from each bigha of land.
Meanwhile, shortage of farm labourers is seriously affecting harvest of paddy in some areas of the district this season. Md Toger Rahman, a farmer of Hat Kola village of Nondigram upazila, said about 30 to 35 labourers are needed for reaping paddy from one hectare of land.
Md Shamem Islam, another farmer at village Moruel of Khalu upazila in Bogra, said some people, who used to work in Boro harvesting season, are now driving auto-rickshaws causing a crisis farm labourers in the upazila.
Md Mashiur Rahman, a farmer of Ranggamati village of Dhunat upazila, said about 30 to 35 labourers are needed for reaping paddy from one hectare of land.
