The Food Ministry in a statement on Wednesday said there is no evidence of rotten or substandard wheat in the consignment imported from Brazil.
In the wake of recent media criticism for importing two lakh metric tonnes of ‘substandard’ Brazilian wheat, the Food Ministry has conducted a laboratory test after collecting the sample of the wheat and found no evidence of rotten and substandard elements in it, said the statement, signed by deputy secretary Md Kawsar Ahmed.
It also added that as per the Public Procurement Rules 2008, a tender was floated for importing wheat from abroad, and that according to the rule wheat can be imported from any country except Israel through tenders.
The authorities concerned has accepted the wheat consignment after a laboratory test, said the statement.
Earlier on Saturday, Food Minister Kamrul Islam told the parliament that the government will not import wheat from Brazil any more because of its poor quality.
