Detectives have launched a massive hunt to nab the masterminds of an Islamist militant outfit after getting an ‘alarm call’ from Singapore police about regrouping of some Bangladeshi terrorists under cover of migrants making the foreign land as base camp.
Singapore police recently arrested 25 Bangladeshi militants conducting operations from different parts of the city on charge of direct involvement in militant activities and planning to form a new terror group ‘La Majhab’. Later, the Singapore authority sent the arrested persons to Bangladesh.
According to police, the ‘La Majhab’ has been formed getting ideological inspiration from Jasimuddin Rahmani, who is the chief of Ansarullah Bangla Team [ABT], an Islamist militant outfit banned by Bangladesh government last year for killing of bloggers and freethinkers.
Some ‘deep cover’ militant leaders had masterminded the formation of terror group ‘La Majhab’ and they were pulling string of the organization from Bangladesh using internet and other sophisticated communicating apps, the police sources said.
The Singapore Intelligence, however, managed to intercept the communication and received enough information about the newly formed ‘La Majhab’ before it could spread wings with full strength.
Police said the ‘returnees’ have already been interrogated by Taskforce Interrogation Cell in Bangladesh. Of the 25 suspects, eleven persons were freed for not getting solid proof about their involvement in militant activities. But fourteen others were handed over to Detective and Criminal Intelligence Division for further intensive interrogation.
“We have started a full-scale investigation into the matter. Already we have got some important information about ‘extremism’ after quizzing 14 suspected [Bangladeshis those have been sent back from Singapore],” Md Monirul Islam, Joint Commissioner, Detective and Criminal Intelligence Division, La Majhab, a new militant outfit

“We have started a full-scale investigation into the matter. Already we have got some important information about ‘extremism’ after quizzing 14 suspected [Bangladeshis those have been sent back from Singapore],” Md Monirul Islam, Joint Commissioner, Detective and Criminal Intelligence Division,
Dhaka Metropolitan Police, told media. The 14 arrested persons, those were found involved in primary interrogation, were identified as: Md Aminur, Abdul Aleem, Shah Alam, Golam Jilani, Nurul Amin, Mahmudul Hasan, Zafar Iqbal, Akram Hossain, Abdul Ali, Ashraf Ali, Saiful Islam, Alam Mahbub, Dollar Parvez and Mohammad Jasim.
According to information received in Dhaka, the arrested persons used to collect donation in Singapore in the name of caged ABT leader Jasimuddin Rahmani. They also used to gather at Angolia Mosque near Mostafa Market in Singapore City each Sunday evening. In the meeting, they used to deliver ‘jihadi statement’ and ‘jihadi videos’ to attract new recruits.
Quoting the statement of detained persons, the detective officials said two Bangladeshi persons used to visit Singapore each month to motivate the Bangladesh recruits to jihadism.
“Police are now conducting massive operation to hunt down the said two jihadists,” Monirul Islam further said.
The government banned ABT in 2015. In the confidential report sent by Police Headquarters to Home Ministry said that ABT is known in the outer world as a comparatively bigger militant organization than the Jama’atul Mujahedin Bangladesh and Harkat-ul Jihad. ABT follows the ideology of al-Qaeda.
In 2009, the government imposed ban on another militant outfit Hazbut Tahrir. Earlier in 2005, the Bangladesh government banned Harkat-ul Jihad Al Islam, Jagrato Muslim Janata Bangladesh, Harkat-ul Jihad Al Islam Bangladesh and Shahadat al Hikmat for their terrorist activities.
The letter of Police HQs also said that ABT is an active organization which had started journey in 2008 and spread its activities across the country in 2013. Its main object was to get hold of some areas by motivating Bangladeshi youths in Jihadi ideology.
According to police, the ABT uses mosques for spreading ideology and its main targets of killing are bloggers, freethinkers and cultural personalities. The ABT has also been claimed by police to be linked to Islami Chhatra Shibir, the student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami.
