News Desk :
Authorities in Kuwait are prosecuting Lakshmipur 2 constituency lawmaker Mohammad Shahid Islam alias Papul as a local criminal.
Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen, who recently visited Kuwait, confirmed the matter on Wednesday, reports Bangla Tribune. “A member of parliament is being tried in Kuwait and we have no qualms about that,” Dr Momen said. Neither Papul nor his family took a diplomatic passport, the minister said, adding that he was working there as a local businessman and that is why he is being identified as a local criminal. However, the foreign minister claimed that he did not discuss the Papul issue with anyone from the Kuwaiti government.
“But from what I’ve heard, he gave a lot of people jobs and there are some bad guys in Kuwait too. Now they [Kuwait authorities] are trying to find out if he gave a job to anyone there or not,” the minister said.
He continued: “Now they are monitoring them. They are being kept if they are good, otherwise they are being sacked. As a result, some of our expatriates are at risk of losing their jobs.”
On June 7, Kuwaiti police arrested MP Papul on charges of human trafficking, visa fraud, and money laundering.
After questioning him, police claimed that Papul had amassed a large amount of wealth by swindling people. Influential government officials in Kuwait also helped Papul in doing so in exchange for bribes, gifts, and other opportunities.
