The Khulna University of Engineering and Technology administration has expelled nine students, including a Chhatra League leader, over the death of Prof Md Selim Hossain.
In a statement a day after the campus was closed, the university said:
“The university syndicate has decided to temporarily expel nine students for violating KUET discipline and our code of conduct.”
KUET Chhatra League General Secretary Sadman Nahiyan Sejan is among the nine students expelled, reports bdnews24.com.
Selim, the provost of Lalan Shah Hall and a professor in the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, died at his home after he met a group of students led by Sejan on Tuesday.
It was alleged that Sejan and the other students insulted Dr Selim, after which he fell sick and died.
Sejan has denied the allegations.
The eight other students expelled by KUET are: Tahamidul Haque Ishraque, Sadman Sakib, Ragib Ahsan Munna, Mahmudul Hasan, Md Kamruzzaman, Riaz Khan Niloy, Faysal Ahmed Rifat and Naimur Rahman Antu.
The KUET authorities decided to shut the university and asked students to leave dormitories amid anger and protests over the death of the teacher.
A new committee has been formed to investigate the professor’s death after two teachers, including Prof Md Ariful Islam of the previous committee, resigned from their posts.
