Krishak Sramik Janata League President Abdul Kader Siddiquee on Monday demanded resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda for branding BNP founder Ziaur Rahman as pioneer of multi-party democracy in the country.
Kader Siddiquee came up with the remarks after he walked out from a meeting with the Election Commission at Nirbachon Bhaban in the capital to discuss about the upcoming general elections.
The dialogue started around 11:00am.
“The statement that, the CEC made should be withdrawn and he should resign,” Kader Siddiquee told journalists.
“The CEC said that Zia re-established the multi-party democracy in the country, that means someone destroyed the multi-party democracy. The CEC was alone in giving these comments and did not discuss this with the other Election Commissioners.
He said, the CEC lost his impartiality by expressing opinion that Ziaur Rahman restored the multi-party democracy during a dialogue with Bangladesh Nationalist Party on Sunday.
The party placed an 18-point demands with the EC in regard to the upcoming general elections.
The CEC on Sunday during a meeting over the next Parliamentary Election with BNP said that Ziaur Rahman had brought back the system for multi-party democracy in our country.”
CEC Huda also discussed ‘positive measures’ taken by past BNP administrations.
The BNP, during its time in power, was able to establish a ‘natural and new course’ of governance, he said.
The EC’s dialogues with the stakeholders including 40 registered political parties began on August 24, apparently to elicit their views regarding the preparations for the next general election.
On July 31, the Commission held the first dialogue with 40 civil society members over the next general election.
