Over 200 posts vacant: KMP’s Traffic Division suffering from manpower shortage, logistic support

Due to severe manpower shortage, the Traffic Division of Khulna Metropolitan Police (KMP) has been suffering acutely and as such its activities are hampering. More than 200 posts than that of the demand are lying vacant in the traffic division, sources said.
Recently (On March 9, 2019), Sardar Rakibul Islam, the Acting Police Commissioner of KMP himself conducted a drive along with the members of traffic division in Khulna city while he welcomed the vehicle drivers by giving chocolates and flowers who have proper papers for plying vehicles on the road.
Meanwhile, as per instructions of the acting police commissioner Sardar Rakibul Islam, the traffic division of KMP started drives against the vehicle drivers who are not abiding traffic rules. At the same time, wearing Helmets, keeping necessary papers including registration papers of vehicles, driving licenses and insurance papers are being checked by the traffic division.
According to the sources of the traffic division of KMP, only 205 posts are available here against 406 posts and as such they are being puzzled for performing their duties.
Sources further said, in the traffic division, 406 posts are necessary for KMP’s traffic Division. The posts are – one deputy police commissioner (DC), two additional deputy police commissioners (ADCs) two assistant police commissioners (ACs), 10 police inspectors, 2 sub inspectors, 75 sergeants, 5 TSIs 3 ASIs, 50 ATSIs and 256 police constables. But only 205 policemen out of 284are now on duty in the traffic division.79 policemen are on leaves. Besides logistic supports are not sufficient in the traffic division of KMP.
Md Kamrul Islam, Additional Deputy Commissioner of the traffic division (ADC, Traffic) of KMP told the journalists that the area of KMP has increased, at present half of the manpower in comparison of the demand is conducting duties. He said adding that if the manpower shortage is reduced and logistic support is fulfilled, then the traffic division of KMP will conduct duties smoothly.
With a view to avert from repeated road accidents, the Traffic Division of Khulna Metropolitan Police (KMP) started vehicles speed monitoring works since Thursday through a weighing machine called Speed-gun. This monitoring was started since February 28, 2019 ( Since a week ago) in Khulna city while on the first day around 150 vehicles were monitored and cases were filed against at least 10 for driving vehicles speedily. At the same time instruction was given by the Traffic Division of KMP for running all kinds of vehicles in the city in the maximum speed of 40 kilometers.
KMP’s Traffic Division sources said, The term “Speed-gun” means the machine for weighing speed of vehicles with which speed of plying vehicles per hour are identified through camera and lesser .
Traffic Division Sources further said, out of three Speed-guns, this is the best and ultra-modern with which it would be possible to take snap of Number plates and speed of vehicles from half a kilometer distance.
This machine is being used for the first ever time in Khulna. Since Friday ( Since March 8, 2019), many more Speed-guns will be set at different important intersections of the city.
If anybody drives vehicles in the speed beyond the instruction or more speed as instructed by the Traffic Division of Khulna Metropolitan Police (KMP) authoritis, cases will be filed against them and punishment will be awarded of Taka 300, sources added.
Md. Kamrul Islam, Additional Deputy Commissioner of the traffic division (ADC, Traffic) of KMP told the journalists that three speed-guns were given to KMP with which speed of vehicles will be possible to identify within a second easily.
The speed-guns are of lesser company which have been brought from China, he added.
ADC, Traffic again said, if any vehicle are run in Khulna City Corporation area crossing the speed limit as instructed by KMP, cases will be filed against them.
Md Ziaur Rahman, Deputy Director of BRTA’s Khulna Office (DD, BRTA) said, For using speed-guns, speed of vehicles will be under control in the city and at the same time road accidents will also be decreased as well.
 BRTA DD again said, the rule of plying buses and trucks in the city is in the speed of 20 to 25 kilometers per hour. He said adding that outside the city corporation, trucks will have to ply in the speed of 45 kilometers per hour, motorbikes in the speed of 70 kilometers per hour and buses will have to ply in the speed of 80 kilometers per hour.
