Grabbing of west bank of Kirtankhola River by a local influentials is going on speedily.
After visiting the spot and talking with local people, the allegation found fact.
Visiting the area it was found that around 200 feet piling work in to river bed near Dhangobeshona (Rice Research Institute) Road under Ward No 24 of Barishal City Corporation already completed.
Now work for constructing wall using concrete block is going on.
Local people said this river grabbing attempt started about two weeks ago by one Raisul Kabir Swapan, a petrol pump owner of the Rupatali bas stand area.
Abdul Malek, a local resident of the area, said the river bed expands during rainy seasons and shrinks in dry winter seasons.
Taking this opportunity the grabbers often operate piling and wall construction works encroaching and filling the river bank during dry winter season, he added.
Accused Raisul Kabir Swapan claimed his grandfather Safez Uddin Howladar purchased 60 decimal lands in 1954 and since then the land was under their possessions and they using that.
Besides that their family owned more than 19.36 acres of land in the same area, but due to river erosion now only 12/13 acre exists and some land also raised (poyosti) from river .
They doing piling work and constructing wall to prevent river erosion on upcoming rainy season. It was not grabbing the river, but attempt to save their own land properties from river erosion.
Rajib Ahmed, additional district magistrate, said river bank never could be a private property.
He asked assistant commissioner (land) to visit the spot and investigate the allegation as soon as possible
If the allegation of grabbing river bed would be found fact, then action would be taken against the grabbers to recover the river, the ADM assured.
Mehedy Hasan, Assistant Commissioner (Land) of Barishal Sadar Upazila, said district administration already started drive against the illegal encroachments of Kirtankhola River bed and started demolishing the structure constructed there.
After visiting the aforesaid grabbing spot on kirtankhola River bank at Rupatali area on Sunday, we have not found the accused person who leading the work. But we asked the local people and workers to inform the land grabber to demolish willingly the constructed illegal structures there, or to operate eviction drive soon in default, he added.
