An inmate at Chattogram Central Jail was killed early Thursday following a fight inside a cell. The victim Amit Muhuri was accused in 15 criminal cases, including several murders. The killing of Amit inside the prison is unusual, unaccepted and mysterious. Now, a section people are trying to downplay the incident saying that a top terrorist was killed during a fight with other criminal. We must say the prison authority though was responsible for maintaining security, failed drastically in this particular case. If there was minimum security arrangement, it was impossible to kill an inmate, whoever he might be, inside the prison.
There is a strong belief among the general people that Amit was killed in a bid to suppress the involvement of many influential persons in different crimes including murder cases. Some top influential persons in Chattogram had used him as a hit man. If he was alive, their crimes might be exposed. The jail authority should have reliable answers to many queries.
Quoting jail authority, news media reported that Amit was fatally hit in the head by a brick following an altercation with another inmate Ripon Nath. He was rushed to Chattogram Medical College Hospital where he succumbed to injuries on Wednesday night. The jail authorities filed a case with Kotwali Police Station accusing Ripon, who has been serving since April in an arms case. The authorities have already formed an investigation committee in this regard.
Usually, knife, stick rod, hammer, and even looking glass are not allaowed in the prison. And it is almost impossible to keep any hard substance without prior permission of jail authority. That means, the substance which may be used as a weapon is totally banned. Now, question has been raised how an inmate could manage a brick inside a high-security cell (only three were staying there)? Who supplied him the brick and for what reason?
Amit was serving in prison being arrested in a specific murder case with enough evidences. Even so, he had the right to get justice under the existing law but the jail authority’s apathy made the inmate a victim. We are not denying possibilities that he was killed only to cut off godfathers’ link with various crimes in Chattogram.
