Killer waste

With the rapid technological progress, the dependence on the electronic goods has excessively increased manifold in the globe, including our country.
But the waste from these electronic goods poses threat to the environment and living beings.
It has been said in a study report conducted by Environment and Social Development Organisation (ESDO) that about one crore metric tonnes of electronic waste is produced from damaged electronic goods in our country annually, i.e. 27,400 tonnes daily.
Spoiled computers, laptops, mobile phone sets, tube lights, chargers, televisions, refrigerators, fax machines, electric bulbs are, among other electric things, producing waste, according to the survey report. Harmful substance such as
radiation, lead, mercury, cadmium, bromine, retardant fame, and polyvinyl chloride are present in the waste, poisoning the environment.
According to the World Health Organisation, human beings may be affected with various diseases, such as, kidney failure, cancer, hearing problem, asthma, nerve weakness, losing lung, tuber colossi or TB, brain hemorrhage, sleepless, loss of memory and skin diseases.
In 2012, the Environment Directorate drafted a policy titled “Disposal Management Role” and sent it to the Environment Ministry for its next process. It is yet to be enacted.
Some environmentalists said, the huge extents of waste and non-disposal have become a matter of concern to the environment, human beings, animals and soil. The drafted policy should be enacted, they added.
The survey study states, the extent of electronic waste in the country was about one crore metric tonnes in 2013.
Some businessmen collect their required materials from damaged electronic things and keep unnecessary portions in soil or dump in water, which greatly pollute the environment and spread diseases.
Bangladesh Poribesh Andolon (BAPA) Secretary General Dr M A Motin said, the developed countries have laws to dispose damaged electric products but we have not. He requested the government to give heed to the matter.
