Two babies were allegedly killed by their mothers in city’s Mugda and Chuadanga’s Alamdanga upazila early Monday.
The deceased were identified as Roja Akter, 3, daughter of killer Roksan Akter Rubi, 32, an inhabitant of Maniknagar area under Mugda Police Station, and Sneha Akter, 2, daughter of Shamim Ara Saima, 35, wife of Mamun Ur Rashid, a resident of Sonatonpur village in Alamdanga upazila of Chuadanga district.
In Dhaka, Roja died after eating ice cream mixed with poison by her mother.
The mother also attempted to commit by taking the same poison after the death of her baby, said Proloy Kumar Shaha, Officer-in-Charge of Mugda Police Station.
Police also arrested Roja’s mother Rubi who was under police custody, the police official said.
Roja’s uncle filed a murder case accusing Rubi with the police station, the OC said.
In Chuadanga, Sneha was allegedly slaughtered by her mother at Sonatonpur village in Chuadanga. According to police and locals, Saima took Sneha to the kitchen of their house and slaughtered her with a sharp weapon.
Other members of the family were asleep during the incident. Later, Sneha’s slaughtered body was found by the family members in the kitchen.
Alamdanga Police Station OC Munshi Asad said, “We have recovered the child’s body, and it has been sent to Chuadanga Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy.
“We have arrested Shamim Ara Saima and during primary investigation she confessed to her guilt,” he said.
The deceased’s father said that his wife has been suffering from mental illness.
