Detective Branch (DB) of Police arrested six members of a kidnapping gang at Madhya Paikpara in the capital on Tuesday.
The arrested persons are gang leader Abu Taleb (68), Azaharuddin Khan (42), Mohammad Mostafa (40), Shamim Sikder (25), Dola Akhter (20) and Salma Begum (45).
Deputy Commissioner Krisnapada Roy of Detective Branch of Police disclosed the matter to newsmen in the Media Centre of Dhaka Metropolitan Police.
The DC said that the gang used to pose themselves sometimes as DB police and sometimes as journalist. As per their tactics, the female members used to develop cordial relations with the targeted affluent people over cell phone and invite them to some rented flats. The moment the targeted victim went there, the other gang members posing to be law enforcers swooped on hem for money. In some cases, male members used to kidnap targeted rich people and captured compromising picture with Dola Akhter and demand money, he said.
On February 20 this year, the gang allured a high government official using one of the female members. They realised Tk 17 lakh as ransom for his release.
DB officials said that the gang members picked up a UK emigrant from in front of Mirpur BRTA office on August 26 in 2013. They took some obscene photos of the man with Dola forcibly and, later, released him after collecting Tk 24 lakh as ransom.
In such way, the gang blackmailed three people and took away around Tk 46 lakh during last one year. Later, the DB members arrested them following information from the rescued persons. The detectives seized a pair of handcuff, a walky-talky and a digital camera. Two separate cases were filed with Mirpur police station in this connection.]
