Health service is being conducted in a dilapidated 81-year risky building in Khulna General Hospital since long.
Sources said, in 2014, the then Civil Surgeon Dr. Yasin Ali recommended for renovating the dilapidated buildings of the hospital. In 2015, Afrin Ara Begum, joint secretary of the finance division of the Public Works Department visited the spot and directed to remove the dilapidated buildings.
The present Civil Surgeon Dr. ASM Abdur Razzak sent a letter requesting for reforming the dilapidated buildings to the executive engineer of the Public Works Department -1 on October18, 2016.
Besides, on October 16, 2016, the personal secretary of the Prime Minister Dr. Nomita Haldar directed to remove the dilapidated buildings at a conference, held at the conference room of the Deputy Commissioner of Khulna.
At last on November 12, 2016, the civil surgeon said before the secretary of the Ministry of Health & Family Planning that the civil surgeon has no his own office, a dilapidated building of Khulna General Hospital is his office.
On a recent spot visit, this correspondent found a signboard in front of the outdoor department of the hospital where it is written “This building is risky and unusable”. Hospital sources said, in spite of the fact that some buildings were declared as abandoned in 1987, but they were not renovated still. Due to shortage of buildings, patients are being deprived of getting proper service.
According to an internal report, civil surgeon’s building is very ancient, dilapidated and unsuitable for living, cracks developed on the roof and water falls from the ceiling, as such valuable official papers are damaging. Official activities are being hampered due to shortage of rooms. The civil surgeon is being compelled to live at a school health clinic and two watchmen are watching the dilapidated the residence of the civil surgeon.
Md. Zakir Hossain, Executive Engineer of the public works department-1 said, proposal was sent for including the dilapidated building of the hospital in the operational plan (OP) and if it is included there after proper steps would may be taken.
