UNB, Khulna :
An indefinite strike in all private clinics, hospitals and diagnostic centres in the city protesting Wednesday’s attack on Gazi Medical Collage Hospital by Khulna University (KU) students entered the second day on Sunday, causing untold sufferings to the patients.
The local chapter of Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA) and Bangladesh Private Clinic, Diagnostic Hospital Owner’s Association originally enforced a 48-hour strike on Saturday.
However, the strike was extended for an indefinite period on Sunday. Vice-President of Khulna BMA Dr Sheikh Baharul Alam made the announcement at a press briefing at Khulna Press Club.
All private clinics, diagnostic centres, private chambers and hospitals were seen closed during the strike, forcing patients to go back without receiving any treatment.
Besides, a section of physicians at Gazi Medial College Hospital went on a work abstention protesting the abduction of an intern Tanvir Ahmed Bappa, who was picked up from hospital by KU students following the death of their fellow student Amit Roy on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, the students of Khulna University placed a four-point demand at a press briefing held at the campus on Sunday.
The demands include providing compensation to the family members of Amit by Gazi Medical College Hospital for their negligence of duty, seeking pardon through a press briefing for their allegations against KU students, withdrawing the allegations and exemplary punishment to the driver of Town Service Bus.
Amit Roy, 23, was taken to the hospital after he sustained injuries in a road crash on Wednesday. Finding his condition critical, expert doctors at the hospital referred him to Dhaka Medial College Hospital. However, he died on the way to the capital.
As the news spread around, some 250-300 KU students appeared on the scene and went on the rampage at the hospital. They assaulted many employees and picked up Tanvir in an ambulance around 2am on Thursday.
Police rescued Tanvir from KU campus around 6am on the day.
