UNB, Khulna :
After four days of work abstention, doctors have postponed their indefinite strike in the district until July 15 following assurance from the local MP and the administration of looking into their demands.
The decision came at a joint meeting of the local chapter of Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA), Bangladesh Private Medical Practitioners Association (BPMPA) and Bangladesh Private Clinic and Diagnostic Owners’ Association (BPCDOA) on Tuesday night.
BMA central vice-president Dr Sheikh Baharul Alam said they have postponed their strike for seven days after local MP Mizanur Rahman and Deputy Commissioner Sheikh Harunur Rashid assured them of meeting their demands.
He, however, said they will observe daylong work abstention on July 16-17 if their demands are not by the time.
All hospitals, clinics and diagnostic centres went on the strike on Saturday protesting attack on Gazi Medical Collage Hospital by Khulna University (KU) students over death of a fellow, paralysing medical services.
Meanwhile, the Khulna University authorities filed a case against 8-10 people on Tuesday night for alleged negligence in treatment that led to the death of KU student Amit Roy.
Neuron Specialist Dr Mahsin Ali Faraji and Chairman of Gazi Medical College Hospital Dr Gazi Mizanur Rahman were among the accused.
KU student Amit Roy, 23, was taken to the hospital after he sustained injuries in a road crash on Wednesday. Finding his condition critical, expert doctors at the hospital referred him to Dhaka Medial College Hospital. However, he died on the way to the capital.
As the news spread around, some 250-300 KU students appeared on the scene and went on the rampage at the hospital. They assaulted many employees and picked up Tanvir in an ambulance around 2am on Thursday.
Police rescued Tanvir from KU campus around 6am on the day.
