Khulna division logs 60 single-day deaths, 1,900 cases

Covid-19 claimed 60 more lives in Khulna division in 24 hours until Wednesday morning, the highest single-day fatalities in the region, said divisional health authorities.
During the period, 1,900 people were infected with the deadly virus, shattering the previous record.
Khulna recorded 51 deaths on Monday while 1865 people were found infected in one day on Tuesday.
Dr Rasheda Sultana, director (Health), said 21 people died of coronavirus in Khulna in 24 hours, 11 in Kushtia, six in Jashore, seven in Jhenaidah, five in Chuadanga, four in Narail, three in Bagerhat, two in Meherpur and one in Magura districts.
In the Khulna division, the first case of Covid-19 was detected on March 19, 2020 in Chuadanga.
So far, 63,934 people have been infected with the virus in 10 districts of the division and the death toll has hit 1,325.
Some 42,844 people have so far recovered from the disease.
Meanwhile, Khulna is now the worst Covid-affected district in the country.
In the past 24 hours, as many as 22 people succumbed to coronavirus, the highest single-day death toll so far, officials said on Wednesday.
While 21 of them died of Covid-19, the remaining one showed symptoms of the virus, said nodal officer at Khulna Corona Dedicated Hospital, Dr Suhas Ranjan Haldar.
Of the deceased, 10 people died at the dedicated Covid facility of Khulna Medical College and Hospital, five succumbed to the virus at the corona unit of Khulna General Hospital,
five at the private Gazi Medical College Hospital, and two at the Shaheed Sheikh Abu Naser Specialised Hospital, he said.
Besides, 189 people are currently undergoing treatment at the hospital. Of them, 116 people are getting treatment in the red zone of the hospital, 34 in the yellow zone and 19 in the ICU (intensive care unit), said Dr Suhas.
Gazi Mizanur Rahman, owner of Gazi Medical College Hospital, said five people died of Covid-19 during the period. Besides, some 131 people are currently undergoing treatment at the hospital, he added.
Moreover, five people have died of Covid-19 at the corona unit of Khulna General Hospital in the past 24 hours, while 65 people are currently undergoing treatment at the facility, said Dr Kazi Abu Rashed, spokesman for the hospital.
Prakash Chandra Debnath, spokesman for Khulna Shaheed Sheikh Abu Naser Specialised Hospital, said, “Currently 43 people are undergoing treatment at the hospital, including nine in the ICU.”
Bangladesh has been experiencing record-high Covid cases and deaths for the last couple of days. The total caseload in the country reached 966,406 on Tuesday, while the death toll climbed to 15,392.
