Khulna Day , the 136th founding anniversary of greater Khulna was celebrated yesterday amid massive festive mood and different programmes.
Greater Khulna Development Action Co-ordination Committee (GKDACC) arranged the function on ‘Khulna Day’.
It is mentionable in this connection that in 1842, comprising with Noyabad and Kismat Khulna , the modern Khulna was established beside the two rivers Bhairab and Rupsha. Khulna achieved its significance mainly for the great Muslim saint Hazrat Khanjahan Ali (RA) and for the largest mangrove of the world the Sundarbans. Hazrat Khanjahan Ali came to this region with a view to preach Islam. On the other hand, the Sundarbans was declared as the world heritage site by the UNESCO. Besides, Khulna has become significant due to its geographical location and after establishing ‘Mahakuma’ (Sub-division) during the rule of the British government.
Only in 40 years, Khulna district was established through gazette notification on April 25, 1882 by comprising with Khulna, Bagerhat and Satkhira areas taking 43500 people upon 4630 square miles.
Marking the day, two factions of Greater Khulna Development Action Co-ordination Committee and Bangladesh Debating Society, Khulna chapter jointly arranged different programs including discussion meeting, colorful rally along with husbands and wives in palanquins, horse carts, Band-party’s display by the rover scouts and folk songs and Bowls songs.
Language soldiers and freedom fighters of Khulna region, government and non government officials, writers of Khulna and members of the civil society have exchanged views on the occasion of ‘Khulna Day’.
Shekh Mosharaf Hossain, President and Sheikh Ashraf Hossain, Chairman of Khulna Unnayan Forum Sharif Shafiqul Hamid Chandon, Khulna City Unit General Secretary , Awami League and also the present lawmaker of Khulna-2 constituency Alhaj Mizanur Rahman Mizan, MP, Former Mayor of KCC Talukdar Abdul Khalek, MP, Khulna Divisional Commissioner Md. Lokman Hossain Mia, Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Khulna district Md. Amin Ul Ahsan, Central leader of Awami League Sheikh Kamal Hossain,KCC Mayor Alhaj Md. Moniruzzaman Moni , former lawmaker of Khulna-2 constituency and also the President of Khulna city unit BNP Md. Nazrul Islam Monju , GKDACC President Sheikh Mosharaf Hossain, General Secretary Sheikh Ashrafuzzaman, Shahin Jamal Pan, Daulatpur Thana Unit Vice President of Awami League Sheikh Mohammad Ali, Director of Khulna Divisional Passport office Md. Abu Sayeed, PID Director Md. Jabed Iqbal and others addressed the meeting.

The speakers in the meeting pressed for different demands including working by coordinating Khulna city corporation, KDA and Khulna district council, 6 lane highway, development of health and education of Khulna inhabitants, making tourism center surrounding the Sundarbans, building river view parks beside the ribers Bhairab and Rupsha, urgent implementation of agriculture university, modernization of Mongla port and Bhomra land port, setting up of Khulna Medical University ,implementation of building Khulna air port on urgent basis and setting up new mills and factories in order to reduce unemployment problem from Khulna region.
Colorful rally, discussion meeting and cultural function were also held marking the Day.
