Khulna court orders PBI to probe gouging out of man’s eyes

A court here on Sunday asked the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) to probe the allegation against 13 people, including the officer-in-charge of Khalishpur Police Station and seven other policemen, of gouging out the eyes of a man for his failure to pay them bribe.
Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Shahidul Islam passed the order after hearing a case filed over the incident, and fixed October 18 for the next hearing.
Earlier, on September 7, Renu Begum, mother-in-law of victim Md Shahjalal, filed the case with the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court accusing eight policemen, three Ansar members and two other people for allegedly gouging out the eyes of Shahjalal, a resident of Kaukhali upazila in Pirojpur district, as he failed to pay them Tk 1.5 lakh as per their demand.
The accused are OC Nasim Khan, sub-inspectors Russel, Tapash Roy, Morselim Mollah, Mizan, Mamun and Nur Islam, assistant sub-inspector Syed Saheb Ali, Ansar member Afsar Ali, lance nayek Abul Hossain, nayek Rezaul, Suma Aktar , a resident of Jessore Road in Khalishpur, and Russel, son of Lutfor Hawladar of Badamtala area.
According to the complaint, Shahjalal went to his
in-laws’ house at Khalishpur in Khulna. On July 18, he was picked up from the area and taken to the Khalishpur Police Station.
Later, police demanded Tk 1.5 lakh to his family for his release but Shajalal’s family failed to give the money.
The following day, the family members discovered him at Khulna Medical College Hospital with his eyes gouged out.
The victim said the policemen gouged his eyes out with a screwdriver taking him to an undisclosed place and left him at the hospital.
Meanwhile, police also filed a mugging case and showed Shahjalal arrested in the case.
