Gemcon Khulna emerged the champions in the Bangabandhu T20 Cup Cricket edging past Gazi Group Chattogram by five runs in the final at the flood-lit Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in the city’s Mirpur on Friday.
Batting first Khulna piled up a fighting total of 155 for the loss of seven wickets in the stipulated 20 overs and then restricted Chattogram to 150 for the loss of six wickets in 20 overs.
Khulna lost their early three wickets for 43 runs.
Then Mahmudullah Riyad and Ariful Haque
made a worthy partnership contributing together 50 runs for the fourth wicket partnership before Ariful Haque was caught behind by wicketkeeper Liton Das off Shoriful Islam when Khulna’s score was 83 for the loss of four wickets.
After Ariful’s dismissal, Khulna batsmen failed to build any notable partnership.
Mahmudullah Riyad fought back alone and dominated Chattogram bowlers.
Riyad remained unbeaten with 70. His 48-ball innings was belted with eight fours and two sixes. He was adjudged the Man of the Match for his outstanding batting performance.
Earlier, opener Zakir Hasan made 25 from 20 balls featuring three fours and a sixer.
Ariful Haque scored 21 from 23 deliveries with two fours.
Nahidul Islam and Shoriful Islam of Khulna bagged two wickets each for 19 and 33 runs respectively.
Mosaddek Hossain and Mustafizur Rahman got one wicket each conceding 20 and 24 runs respectively.
Later, Chattogram had a shaky start as they lost three wickets for 51 runs.
Then Shykat Ali and Shamsur Rahman mended the innings contributing together 40 runs for the fourth wicket partnership before Shamsur Rahman was caught by Shuvagata Hom off Hasan Mahmud when Chattogram’s total was 96 for the loss of four wickets.
After Shamsur Rahman’s departure, Shykat Ali and Mosaddek Hossain added together 47 runs for the fifth wicket partnership before Mosaddek Hossain was caught by Shuvagata Hom off Shohidul Islam when Chattogram’s score was 143 for the loss of five wickets.
After Mosaddek’s dismissal, Shykat Ali was bowled out by Shohidul Islam when Chattogram’s total was 143 for the loss of six wickets.
Shykat Ali hit 53. His 45-ball knock ornamented with four sixes.
Then Nahidul Islam and Nadif Chowdhury failed to chase the Khulna’s target. Thus Chattogram conceded defeat.
Opener Liton Das and Shamsur Rahman added 23 runs each to the Chattogram total.
Shohidul Islam bagged two wickets at the cost of 33 runs, while Shuvagata Hom, Al-Amin Hossain and Hasan Mahmud took one wicket each for eight, 19 and 30 runs respectively.
