Sayeed Khokan, Awami League-supported mayor candidate for South Dhaka, has started his campaign from Dhupkhola.
Meanwhile, BNP leader Mirza Abbas’s wife was campaigning on behalf of her husband at Segunbagicha on Saturday.
The candidates in the elections to two Dhaka City Corporations were allotted poll symbols on Friday. Polling is scheduled for Apr 28.
Khokon is going door-to-door seeking votes.
On the other hand, the BNP’s convener for Dhaka Metropolitan unit, accused in multiple cases, did not make any public appearances in the past several months.
His wife Afroza Abbas, who has been running his campaign, said, she had been feeling his absence
more after getting the poll symbol – the mug. “Mirza Abbas and I are not same. People have been supportive despite his absence. But they prefer to meet their candidates.”
Khokan has been campaigning with his desired symbol – the hilsha – like his late father Mohammad Hanif, who had become Dhaka’s mayor contesting with ‘the fish’ symbol.
Abbas’s supporters had opted for ‘the elephant’ but picked ‘mug’ after it was unavailable.
Mirza Abbas should be granted bail and his incarcerated supporters should be released for the sake of a ‘fair election’, his wife said.
“The government says they want to have a competitive election. In that case, they must grant bail to Mirza Abbas, our councillor candidates and supporters who will campaign for us.”
Khokon, meanwhile, has asked his rival to ‘come out of hiding’ to seek bail in court.
“An individual accused of murder or any other crime should take legal recourse. They shouldn’t hide, because they can always go to court.”
“That does not leave a good impression.” But Afroza Abbas said she was hopeful that her husband would win.
“Even if Mirza Abbas isn’t here and the prime minister asks for votes for her candidate, the people will make the right choice if there is a fair election.”
