A senior BNP leader has said the commerce minister’s name-calling of BNP Senior Vice Chairman Tarique Rahman was simply an attempt to please the Awami League chief.
BNP Vice Chairman Sadeque Hossain Khoka on Saturday said minister Tofail Ahmed was not in Awami League chief Sheikh Hasina’s good books, and was criticising Tarique to amend that.
“We will not let it go if you say whatever you want just to please Sheikh Hasina,” he warned.
In an intense speech in parliament on Thursday, Tofail called BNP chairperson’s son Tarique an idiot, in reaction to Tarique’s claims that his father Ziaur Rahman was the first president of the country and Bangabandhu was an illegal prime minister.
Khoka attacked the things Tofail said in that speech.
“Since he’s become a minister, Tofail is always quick to criticise BNP. He claimed Ziaur Rahman was always going out of breath calling him sir. Was he really so powerful?” he said.
“Then where was this powerful man when Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and his family were killed in 1975? He was in charge of the Rakkhi Bahini. Bad people say Tofail was involved with those murders,” Khoka continued.
He raised the issue of Tofail not getting a place in Hasina’s government in 2009.
“Sheikh Hasina does not trust him. That’s why he is saying nonsense to get in her good books,” he said.
“Tofail, (Mohammad) Nasim became ministers after the voter-less election, just because of Khaleda Zia’s movement. They should salute her,” Khoka added.
The BNP leader warned the Awami League that negative remarks about Ziaur Rahman and Tarique Rahman would be “answered to”.
