Speculation goes in the air that BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia will linger her stay in London for more than a month. Alongside others, the BNP leaders and activists are also in confusion as to when she will return home.
Many said that Khaleda Zia is delaying her return in order to develop international relations and to secire foreign support for a fresh election under a non-party government system. Her elder son Tarique Rahman, who has been staying there for several years, is also working with the BNP chief in this regard.
A source close to Khaleda Zia said that she and her son are trying to convince
different foreign powers, including the USA, the UK, China and India in this regard. At the same time, Khaleda Zia is trying to visit India to discuss the matter.
Party insiders say that the BNP chief is making delay, as she is undergoing treatment there apart from trying to get international support for early polls. She is also delaying to finalise the party’s anti-government movement strategy and the party’s restructuring process.
A BNP leader told The New Nation that after returning to Bangladesh, Khaleda Zia will start to reorganise the party and then start fresh movement against the government.
Khaleda Zia left Dhaka for the United Kingdom on September 15. She celebrated Eid-ul-Azha there with her family members. She was scheduled to return home on October 3, then October 16 and then October 21.
According to a reliable source, there is no possibility of Khaleda Zia’s return before the first week of November. The BNP is taking preparation to give her a warm reception.
When contacted, BNP Chairperson’s Gulshan office and the party’s Nayapaltan central office can’t confirm any date of Khaleda Zia’s return.
The media wing of BNP Chairperson said, Khaleda Zia is expected to return home at the end of this month but can’t confirm the exact date. “Although Madam (Khaleda Zia) has not finalised any date till now, she may return home at the end of October,” said Shairul Kabir Khan, a media wing member.
BNP’s current spokesman Dr Asaduzzaman Ripon claimed that the party chief was undergoing treatment there. Many started making speculations as to whether Khaleda Zia would return home soon or not, or whether she would face any government restrictions on her homecoming.
