BNP leaders and activists brought out several processions in the city on Friday after Juma prayers disagreeing with the court judgment of jailing party Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia in a graft case and demanded her immediate release.
Several hundred BNP leaders and activists joined the procession brought out from the north gate of the National Mosque, Baitul Mukarram, after Friday Congregation around 2pm.
A large number of police and RAB members closely watched the procession from behind.
BNP Secretary-General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, BNP Assistant Organising Secretaries Abdus Salam Azad and Shahidul Islam Babul, President of Swecchasebak Dal Shafiul Bari Babu and Juba Dal General Secretary Sultan Salauddin Tuku guided the procession.
Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal leaders and activists from Dhaka University, Jagannath University and different colleges of Dhaka city and Juba Dal, Swechchhasebak Dal and other front bodies’ leaders and activists paraded the city streets.
Another procession from the Nayapaltan Mosque after the Juma prayers marched through the city. The root level activists of the BNP joined the procession, which merging with the other processions brought out from Baitul Mukarram north gate murmured on.
The police dispersed the procession when it reached the Nayapaltan headquarters, chanting slogans around 2:20 pm. Police picked up few BNP activists from Nayapaltan and adjacent areas. Shibli Noman, the Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) of Motijheel Zone of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, said “As the BNP men have taken part in their pre-announced demonstrations peacefully; police helped them to end their programme without creating any obstacle.”
“The law enforcers were prepared to control any situation if they created any anarchy,” he said.
When asked about detention of few BNP men, he said he had no information of it. If any one was taken, he/she would be released if found innocence.
Besides this, BNP men also carried out processions in several thanas in the capital city and Zila and Upazila towns across the country as part of the party’s announced countrywide demonstrations.
BNP on Thursday announced countrywide demonstrations protesting its Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s conviction in Zia Orphanage Trust graft case.
