Zia Trust case: Khaleda’s bail extended

The Special Judge Court-5 of Dhaka yesterday (Sunday) extended the bail of BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia till October 14 in Zia Charitable Trust graft case.
Judge Dr Md Akhtaruzzaman of the court passed the order after Khaleda Zia’s lawyer Masud Ahmed Talukder submitted a petition seeking extension of her bail.
Besides, Khaleda Zia’s lawyers submitted a written statement as the court on September 29 asked the defence to explain by Sunday (October 7) as to why her bail would not be cancelled in the Zia Charitable Trust graft case.In the written statement, advocate Masud Talukder said, as Khaleda Zia is now in the prison, her bail should not be cancelled. The court fixed the same date for passing order on the prosecution’s petition submitted for cancellation of her bail.
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) had filed the Zia Charitable Trust graft case against Khaleda and three others with Tejgaon Model Police Station in August, 2011. According to the case statement, the former Premier and three others abused their power and raised funds for the trust from unknown sources.
The three other accused persons are Harris Chowdhury, political secretary to the then Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, Ziaul Islam Munna, assistant private secretary (APS) to Harris, and Monirul Islam Khan, APS to former Dhaka City Mayor Sadeque Hossain Khoka.
